The trees are finally starting to turn green which means spring is well underway. Although we tend to use the BBQ even in the winter at our house, the summer is usually synonym of grilling more often.

And what’s a good cook out if you don’t have to right condiments?! As you may probably know, most store bought condiments are full of added sugar. – I’m looking at you ketchup –

So since I love revamping recipes to either get rid of the sugar or swapping it for a more natural option, it was only a matter of time until BBQ sauce came on my list.

Instead of using refined sugar, I put in some molasses and a little maple syrup to sweeten the deal. Using tomato sauce with a little tomato paste allows for more punch while getting a bit of a thicker consistency.

Letting this simmer for a while uncovered will also help to thicken it out.

This sauce is awesome on ribs, taste great with some stock for pulled pork but even just as a dipping sauce for your grilled chicken.

Homemade BBQ sauce

Free of refined sugar but still taste like the real deal. Amazing on ribs or with pulled pork.

Ingredients

  • 1 can tomato sauce 398 ml
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1.5 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne optional

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients into a small saucepan
  • Bring to a boil on medium heat then reduce to low heat and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes or until it thickens. Make sure to stir often.
  • Let cool and store in a glass container in the fridge for up to 10 days.
