I love the summer when it comes to grocery shopping. Especially when it comes to fruits! Fresh fruits are so abundant and some grocery stores are working really hard at sourcing local or at least Canadian.

I love buying whatever is on sale but sometimes I get carried away. It’s like I know it’s only a matter of time until the season is over and I end up with a ton of fruits in my fridge that even my kids can’t eat them fast enough!

Enter the gigantic portion of cherries I bought knowing cherry season was coming to an end even though we probably could’ve done without. And exactly like I should’ve expected they stayed in the fridge a little too long and I didn’t want them to go to waste.

But before freezing cherries, you have to pit them…

Ever pitted cherries??

It’s super fun and not tedious at all.. and super clean too! Seriously though, such a mess. But I found a trick that worked well thanks to good old Google! You can take a piping tip – that you would decorate your cakes with- and place it up right on a flat surface. Slowly push the cherries down and the pit should stay on top. Did I mention it’s messy…. cause it is!

But this smoothie makes it all worth it. It taste like dessert and is super filling. I guess it may be worth looking for some more cherries, but maybe I’ll buy the frozen pitted cherries next time.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 1 cup packed spinach
  • 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp collagen powder
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseeds
  • 1 cup almond milk

Instructions

Notes

  1. You can substitute collagen powder for any protein powder of your choice. I prefer to use collagen since it is tasteless.
  2. You can pre blend your oats for a smoother texture.
  3. Make sure to use frozen bananas and frozen cherries for a thicker consistency.
